Larian shared some stats, and Baldur's Gate 3 launched with considerably more combat encounters, characters, spells and lines of dialogue. It seems quite a bit denser than Original Sin 2's Early Access. If you're in a rush, it can be finished in seven minutes. There are clear paths and a main quest that will take you all across the map, but there's plenty to find off the beaten track. But that really depends on how many fights you get into-there are plenty of ways to bypass them-and how much exploring you do. Patch 6 will also include equippable salami that can be dual-wielded, a jokey reference to some shenanigans that occurred during an interactive LARP during a livestream. They also rely on Charisma rather than Intelligence, and can double as a good 'face' character with decent social skills. Sorcerers don't get access to high-level spells as soon as wizards, but can cast the spells they've got more often, which is a decent trade. It's likely to include a new playable class, probably the sorcerer since when the patch was announced Larian asked, 'Who's ready to make some magic?' The sorcerer's deal is being able to spontaneously cast arcane spells, unlike wizards who are limited to selecting from the spells they prepare while resting.

The upcoming patch 6 will be a more significant one, and Larian are calling it 'our biggest ever'. Over 800 lines have been recorded for each character already, and there will be more in the finished game. Also, when you tell party members what to do they'll have something to say in response, and those lines will change as you work through the story and their arcs. Secret miniquests have been added that reward you for acting in-character, as determined by your background (and those of your companions). Camping has been overhauled so you'll need to spend supplies for each long rest, and combat has been tweaked so the action economy more closely resembles the tabletop game. There's an active dice-rolling interface that lets you cast spells to affect rolls, or ask your companions to cast spells to help you out. Patch 5 is all about community feedback, adding mechanical changes rather than new classes or quests. We've also explored how Baldur's Gate 3 compares to the classic games. There are, of course, plenty of bugs, balance problems, and all sorts of other issues, and you'll never actually get to finish your character's adventure.

According to Destructoid there are 'significant changes in the main storyline that weren't ready or included yet, even in this first act area'. It's great! The story doesn't really get going, and you'll finish just as clueless about what's going on with mind flayers and what you're going to do about this pesky tadpole that's been inserted into your head. It's a slightly anarchic sandbox at times, letting you sneak around pushing people off ledges, or dropping boulders on heads, like you're some fantasy hitman. Baldur's Gate 3 is in Early Access, but what we've played so far is very promising.
